The Dowling Art Center is proud to present Karmin Schafer in her 2018 Solo Show. Schafer will exhibit work from several of her series of paintings including the "SHED" series and the "YELL" series which are both oil paintings. Her newest series “LOST and FOUND” is a branch into mixed media for Schafer who applies the same passion with this language that she speaks to us with in her oil paintings. Visitors will also find some delightful and experimental surprises in the exhibit.
This will be the first time all of Schafer’s series will be exhibited together in one venue. DAC Curator and gallery owner John Dowling sees a connection between Karmin’s personal energy and how it translated to her work. “Karmin brings an intense personal energy and physicality to each of her artworks. Paint applied with fingers and palette knives show us the story of how she works with each piece until it calls out what she wants it to say.
I'm also somewhat in awe of her personal energy which allows her to be a dedicated teacher while devoted to family and faith. Perhaps this is represented in the four corners of the white, glowing rectangles in her paintings?”
Schafer agrees that her intense commitment to her work becomes all consuming. “When I'm working on a series I start to become obsessed with it. My every thought is consumed by so many thoughts and ideas that I can barely draw them down fast enough. It’s common for me to paint for 7-10 hours straight, not even breaking for food. I just can't, I can't waste that time on eating. To become this completely immersed in each painting, I need to feel and connect with the paint. So, no brushes! It’s a very physical process painting with my hands and with palette knives. When I'm finally done, I am both physically and mentally exhausted, having given the canvas everything I have in me.”
This exhibit at DAC is an opportunity to finally see all of these intense moments Schafer has created together in one place. The opening reception will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 from 5:00 – 8:00pm with the exhibit remaining on display through Saturday June 9th. You can also visit the gallery on Saturday mornings from 12Noon-4:00pm to have a cup of coffee with the curator and tour the exhibit at your own pace.
